Post another inept batting display aided by a slew of umpiring errors, Team India slid to an abysmal loss against the Lankans on Sunday at Dambulla.
However, this article is not going to lament another inconsistent performance by Dhoni’s boys. There is probably enough media coverage of the defeat.Nor am I one of those who like to get down to it as the match progresses or as soon as it finishes.
An interesting sideshow of yesterday’s loss was that MS Dhoni and his boys refused to attend the press conference that immediately follows the match. This caused the print journalists to throw up their arms in frustration and boycott the press conference.
The captain was ostensibly busy playing football when the scribes frantically tried to contact him. What a s(h)occer!

IIT Bombay – IRace Aug 1, 2010

I ran my first 10 km race (the IRace) on the 1st of August, 2010 at the IIT Bombay campus at Powai. Running after almost 2 months , I decided not to push myself too much.
However,I was confident I could last the course. But the last 1 km stretch was killing on the feet. 1 hour 35 minutes on a course that was not all flat terrain is not bad ,says I, especially since I have run 10 kms just 2 –3 times in training and not quite recently. The time, incidentally, is the longest period I have run so far. Overall, a satisfying outing for me.
The organizers did a great job. A big Thank YOU!
PS: I would especially like to thank the b*****s yelling ‘Give Up’ throughout the course.Also, the security personnel for acting clueless as to what’s going on and where! (sarcastic note).

Asian cricket blues!

The inability or unwillingness of the BCCI to field an Indian cricket team for the Chinese Asian Games has been greeted with widespread consternation by the Indian public or so the media channels would have us believe. I , for one, am not of the view that India needs to field their best team for the Asian Games and thus the BCCI could have been somewhat more diplomatic and said yes to fielding a second string team like they have for the tri-series in Zimbabwe. Besides apart from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, no other teams of cricketing note will be there! And surely, the Indian cricket team cannot do worse than their performance at the World T20!

Though India was expectedly knocked out of the World T20 tourney late yesterday evening, Indian sports fans had much to cheer about with Viswanathan Anand retaining his world chess championship title by defeating Veselin Topalov in the 12th and final game of the match series with black pieces.

Long Journey For Anand
It has been a long journey for Anand from child prodigy to being the best chess player in the world. This was his 4th world title with victories in all 3 formats of the world championships: 2000 (knock out), 2007 (double round robin tournament), and 2008 & 2010 (match play).
Disastrous run at World T20!

With India’s 2 matches of the Super 8 match over and with them effectively India’s hopes of qualifying for the semis, it is time to make a couple of points about India’s no-show at this tourney.
1> The standard of cricket exhibited at the IPL and the World T20 are reams apart. In the latter, we have the best teams representing their country, whereas the IPL teams are constrained to having just 4 foreign internationals representing them and at the same time they need to ensure that deserving youngsters (read youngsters with potential) are given a chance to ware their talents. So suddenly we have our IPL heroes peppered with short-pitched balls and when you are a team batting second and chasing a large total, you have to try and hit every ball and the proclivity to succumb to the short-pitched variety is both exposed and exploited. Besides, since when have Indian batsmen known to be masters of the short ball?

Now that IPL 3 is finished & done and Chennai Super Kings rule supreme with their name engraved on the (hideous) trophy, a few more thoughts on the IPL and the final:
1> No team has won the title more than once but then we are only in the 3rd edition of the IPL. The final between CSK and Mumbai Indians ensured that there would be a fresh champion once more.
2> The 3rd and 4th place match was a replay of last year’s final with Royal Challengers Bangalore having some semblance of sweet revenge for last year’s loss to the Chargers, though Kumble might not agree! Bangalore now go onto the T20 Champions Trophy! Just to remind you that none of the IPL teams featured in the semi-finals of last year’s T20 Champions tournament.
