Maria Sharapova at 2009 Roland Garros, Paris, ...

Up until the 15th of May 2011, Maria Sharapova had two clay court titles under her belt.

Strasbourg 2010 and Amelia Island 2008 were her only clay court trophies of 22 on the WTA Tour.

But not now. With her victory over Samantha Stosur at Rome on Sunday, the Siberian staked her claim to the French Open this year. She stalked her adversaries and crept up on her prey, unsuspecting. Beware—Maria, the huntress, is on the prowl.

Tennis Bytes: Barcelona,Julia Goerges and 2 year rankings

You  think that maybe he’s vulnerable , that maybe, just maybe, the challenge of Djokovic and the younger brigade is too much to push back; it’s just too much pressure to hold on but then along comes clay season, and Rafael Nadal rises to the occasion, undulating effortlessly to the top.

“You can’t touch me here, I float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” is what the Majorcan sings out, scything through the field like a knife through melted butter.

This Sunday, it was the Barcelona Open making it two out of two for the Spaniard on his favourite surface this year.

Once again, it was his compatriot David Ferrer who succumbed to the No. 1’s might.

Rafael Nadal

Novak Djokovic might have secured a much cherished win at the Dubai Duty Free Championships—another convincing victory over Roger Federer—but it was the World No.1 Rafael Nadal who stole the headlines over the weekend.

The Spaniard declared that the dominance Federer and he established over the majors—a stranglehold  of 21 wins since 2005—is a thing of the past.Nadal reiterated that credit for the duopoly should go to the great Swiss without whom his nine Slams would ring hollow.

Caroline Wozniacki better than Jelena Jankovic or Dinara Safina?

Caroline Wozniacki at the French Open (2009)

The game of musical chairs at the top of the pile continues, featuring Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki.

The Belgian enjoyed a short spell as No. 1 before being swapped out by the surprisingly resilient Dane within a week.

The debate—whether the rankings accurately depict the state of women’s tennis—rages on. This does not detract from the luscious blonde’s achievements; it is a reflection of the fact that quantity can sometimes displace quality.

Caroline Wozniacki’s kangaroo and Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes Vamos their opponents (Satire)

Caroline Wozniacki at the 2009 US Open

Post-match press conferences are boring.

I mean, come on, who wants to talk about the match? It’s just another day at the office. Get wise, guys, we’re pros. It’s our job.

You don’t believe me? Ask Caroline Wozniacki.

The Great Dane felt that the best way to entertain her fans and journalists was to tell a little fib about wrestling a kangaroo.

The kangaroo gave the pretty No. 1 a small cut. Or that’s how the story went.

Australian Open 2011: Not quite giant-killers but no fly-swatters either

It’s always difficult coming into the first Grand Slam of the year. It is as though one has to shake off the excesses of the Christmas festivities ,shed the trappings of the successes in the previous year and get down to business on a clean slate. Yet, one has to act as though one were never away from the hurly-burly of the action on court.

Tennis Bytes: Wozniacki stays No. 1

Caroline Wozniacki ensured that she retained her No. 1 ranking for the year by winning her first match at the WTA Doha championships.

She beat Francesca Schiavone 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in three sets.

Vera Zvonareva stays No. 2  behind the sizzling Dane.

It would have been interesting if Zvonareva had come through to be ranked No.1.

I wonder how many instances are there of two different players ranked No. 1 in the same year without ever having won a Grand Slam?

Any bets as to which of these two will clinch a Slam first?

Samantha Stosur lost to Elena Dementieva 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in her third round robin match.

But her earlier victories against Wozniacki and Schiavone have propelled her into the semi-finals.

Clijsters, too, has made her way to the semis triumphing over Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

Who would have believed it?

Vera Zvonareva gets to her second successive Grand Slam final.

She’s flown under the radar. She allowed Wozniacki and her shorter-than-short dress steal the limelight; she warms up in sweatpants and a jacket despite the sweltering heat and now she has knocked out the Danish sweetheart without so much as a by-your-leave.

Vera Zvonareva, you are going places and how!

Caroline Wozniacki found the pressure of expectations too much to handle and caved in to a much calmer, much hotter  (in terms of the tennis) Vera on a day of one upset and two disappointments at the US Open 2010.

All good things must finally come to an end and so must this year’s US Open.

But before the tennis concludes , there’s just enough time for the artistes to hit the high notes and close the Flushing Meadows symphony on a crescendo.

The final three days will bring fans more mouth-watering, lip-smacking , engrossing wizardry, not to mention coquetry.

A quick dekko at the women’s singles semi-finalists.
