The Guangzhou Asian Games: It came, we saw, it went!
It’s been two weeks of waiting in vain for Indian athletes to prove that their CommonWealth Games medal haul was no flash in the pan. But it was not to be.
Even though India came home with 14 golds, their highest ever tally at an Asiad, comparing our performance against those of the Chinese or the Japanese or the Koreans does put our recent tomtomming in the shade. Let’s get some perspective, chaps!

The Kochi consortium have no glad tidings for even their most die-hard supporters. The Guangzhou Asian Games saw him pick up a rich haul of three medals, two gold in singles and men’s doubles and a bronze in the team event. His singles gold at the CWG pales in comparison. The clinical manner in which the Indian demolished Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin 6-1, 6-2 augurs well for India’s Davis Cup aspirations.

His name is Rahul Sharad Dravid and he has just compiled his 31st ton for India in the third Test at Jamta against New Zealand.
For a man who has over 10,000 Test runs— only the third Indian ever in the select club—Dravid is amazingly low profile.

Sania Mirza continues to delight her Indian fans. She followed up her CommonWealth Games individual silver with an Asiad bronze at Guangzhou. Mirza may be struggling with her ranking on the WTA tour but is enjoying her time in the sun post her recent marriage to Shoaib Malik and a renaissance representing India. Sania and her partner Vishnu Vardhan tamed Tamarine Tanasugarn and Sanchai Ratiwatana 6-3, 6-7 (7-3), 10-5 in the mixed doubles semis to assure the Hyderabadi of another silver—at least.

The BCCI, of late, are more than a little adventurous in their selection of the Indian cricket team for the ODIs.
The line-up for the India – New Zealand ODI series is along expected—and unexpected—lines.The resting of seniors for the ODI series—namely Sehwag, Tendulkar, Zaheer,Harbhajan Singh and skipper Dhoni— was expected.Unexpected is the naming of Gambhir to lead the ODI team and the drafting of Wriddhiman Saha as the sole wicket-keeper in the ODI side. The rumour mill had Sehwag in the captain’s role.

The council members seem untouched by the sordid drama enacted on various stages.

The second Test match at Hyderabad ended as a damp squib as well.
There were many who considered the tourists easy meat coming into the Test series. The New Zealand batsmen obviously had other thoughts.
Except for the first innings here when they collapsed after a healthy start, they have made the Indian bowlers labour hard for their wickets. They have not let the home side buy their wickets cheap.

Harbhajan Singh’s second century at No. 8 in as many innings reads like a fairy tale. He is now the highest run aggregator in the India – New Zealand Test series at home.
Harbhajan ended up with 111 not out; he added 105 for the tenth wicket with Sreesanth. Incredibly, that is just the third-highest last wicket partnership for India.
For a bowler, who has not yet crossed 2,000 Test runs , this is not bad — not bad at all! Has India rediscovered the all-rounder its been seeking?
