The Kochi consortium have no glad tidings for even their most die-hard supporters. The investors in the franchise have struck the death blow ,communicating their inability to work together to the BCCI. The IPL Governing Council meet on November 28, 2010 to perform the last rites. The Gaikwads refused to play ball with the other investors leading to the current impasse. The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) are the sole believers in a miraculous turnaround.
Shashi Tharoor’s dream of a Kerala team ends unhappily. The former External Affairs minister has expressed his disappointment on Twitter in the following three tweets:
“RT @espncricinfo Sad! Accurate reporting from Cricinfo’s reliable Nagaraj:Kochi’s investors pull plug on IPL franchise – http://es.pn/hlyHSB”
“@ImSaran that dream is over for now. Those who didn’t want aKerala IPL team have finally succeeded. Some of us hv paid a high price 4trying”
“Delighted about Somdev DevVarman’s second gold. Makes up4 disappointing news re Kerala IPL team’s apparent collapse after raising hopes ydy”
The BCCI officials hold no grudges against the Kochi investors. Only the promoters— Rendezvous Sports World Pvt Ltd (RSWPL)— will be blacklisted. The investors are free to realign and submit bids.
A top BCCI official said:"The investors haven’t really done anything wrong on their part. "It’s the promoters who bought the team but failed to get it on track”.
Meanwhile, Lalit Modi has received a reprieve from the Supreme Court. His plea for the reconstitution of the BCCI disciplinary committee has been deferred . The administrative body intends to weigh the committee’s jurisdiction in the granted period.
The payment structure is as follows:
Players who have been playing since 2005: Rs. 30 lacs
Players who have been playing since 2006: Rs. 20 lacs
Players who have been playing since 2009-2010: Rs. 10 lacs.
The new framework favours the senior players. But it is the younger players that the IPL teams wish to sign on and retain with a few exceptions. It’s anybody’s guess as to what other enticements will be on offer to cover any perceived shortfall. Player’s agents will have a field day.
Sachin, Dhoni and Sehwag are set to be among the few cricketers retained by their respective teams. They will draw a salary of $1.8 million per annum for the next three years.
November 29, 2010 is a red letter day for Himachal Pradesh. The tiny state is slated to hold the second edition of its version of the IPL. The ‘Twenty20 Mahasangram’ will have a record 1100 to 1300 teams participating with approximately 180,000 players. The picturesque Dharamshala stadium will host the semi-finals and the finals. The winners will be presented Rs. 30,00,000 in cash.
IPL inspired 20-20 tournaments are spreading the game at the grassroots level in states that are not renowned for their cricketing prowess. It is, thus, unfortunate that Kerala cricket will have to wait to benefit from IPL induced euphoria — Tinnu Yohannan and Sreesanth notwithstanding.
In breaking news,Lalit Modi has set the cat among the pigeons breaking his silence in an interview to YouTube’s Mihir Bose. More on that later. Check out Modi’s newly launched website here.
