Quick on the heels of Anjum Chopra’s request to the BCCI to hold an IPL for women cricketers, the premier sports administrative body in the country received another appeal— this time for an IPL constituting wives and girlfriends (WAGS) of cricketers.

The move is spearheaded by Australian spinner Shane Warne’s current love interest, Elizabeth Hurley and MS Dhoni’s wife, Sakshi.

What they said and what they definitely didn’t mean: Shane Warne

What he said:

“New Estee Lauder moisturisers for my skin have made a big difference.”

Shane Warne on his new rejuvenated appearance.

What he definitely didn’t mean or say:

“It’s better than using old-fashioned Vaseline on the ball. It’s two for the price of one.”

“They’re actually borrowed from Liz (Hurley). I feel I need it more than her.”

“Estee Lauder have requested me to be their product spokesperson. (At least, not yet.)”

“I can’t say I’m looking older, can I? Never turn away a compliment, my mother always told me.”

IPL has more than enough gas to cover the fourth stage

The game between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkatta Knight Riders was a humdinger. A last-ball finish was a perfect ending to a cliff-hanger.

Fresh personnel could not take KKR over the line. Captain Cool MS Dhoni retains the Midas touch though he seemed a little lacklustre in the field.

Unforgettable quotes from Bishan Singh Bedi

BANGALORE, INDIA - OCTOBER 06: Rachel Heyhoe ...

Bishan Singh Bedi is never one to mince words—about his contemporaries, protégées, or administrators. He courts controversy like no other. He is the enfant terrible of Indian cricket.

He is a strict disciplinarian. He threatened to dump the Indian cricket team into the ocean in 1990 when he was coach.

Ashes 2010 , Third Test:Musings on Australian preparations

Australia are in trouble at 3/10 when Ricky Po...

Ricky Ponting feels that the Perth wicket will allow him the luxury of playing four fast bowlers. Horses for courses is the theory in play. It may well be a ploy that could backfire. The last time India played Australia in Australia, it was at Perth that the Indians pulled one back to make it 2-1 under the inspiring leadership of Anil Kumble.  The Englishmen’s cause, however, is not helped by Stuart Broad’s injury and consequent absence.

Is The Captaincy Running Out On Ponting?

Five series losses.

Two Ashes in England, the loss to South Africa down under and the two series losses to India in India.

Ricky Ponting is the most unsuccessful Australian captain in recent times. And that is saying something or maybe nothing.

Australians love their cricket and their cricketers but most of all they love to see them win.

And in recent times (not so recent), they had grown accustomed to being masters of all they surveyed.

Players like Shane Warne, Glen McGrath, Matthew Hayden, Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh and Adam Gilchrist ensured that they were at the top of the totem pole. This venerable list would have to include the Punter as well.

The ruthlessness exhibited by the formidable Aussies – over the last decade and a half – is best exemplified by the sixteen test victories (a world record) on the trot , not once, but twice.

Interestingly, their sequence of victories was interrupted by the very same opponent – India.

Adios, Murali: The Final Musketeer

Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (C) shows the ball as team mates carry him on their shoulders after he took his 800th wicket during the fifth day of their first test cricket match against India in Galle July 22, 2010. Muralitharan on Thursday became the first bowler to take 800 test wickets. The 38-year-old Muralitharan, the leading wicket-taker in tests and one-day internationals, dismissed India's Pragyan Ojha to reach the milestone in his last test match appearance. Suddenly there were none!

The Galle test this week brought down the curtain on the career of the last of the three spinning maestros of this generation.

Much has already been written about Muttiah Muralitharan’s exit from the cricketing stage, and many more reams of paper will be consumed describing his exploits in his swan song test at Galle. Murali ended his Test career on a high against his Indian opponents claiming the requisite eight wickets to perch himself atop the summit of 800 wickets – master of all he surveys – in the process ensuring victory for his Sri Lankan teammates.

Murali , Shane Warne and Anil Kumble were the foremost exponents of spin bowling of this generation. Each alike the other but yet very dissimilar. Will there be any more  like them?

They were the three Musketeers of spin bowling; their sovereign – the Art Of Spin Bowling. Come flat tracks, come bouncy ones, come true ones, come lousy ones, come under-prepared ones, come turners, come rain, come shine, they were forever on call to serve their master, to do him proud. All-weather heroes, I term them!
