Random cricketing thoughts on the IPL and beyond

The Ducksworth-Lewis method of calculating second-innings totals has come under the scanner.Mahela Jayawardene and Stephen Fleming criticised the system as being ‘unfair’ and not really suited to T20 cricket.

Brickbats are justified since T20 is a racier, pacier form of cricket compared to ODIs, which are in comparison relatively sedate.

Franchise owners, at the IPL auctions, took player availability into account while making their selections. No team wished to have key players missing during the critical part of the tournament.

The Sri Lankan cricket board seems hell-bent on throwing a spanner in the works. Though they may have the team’s interests in mind, the move to recall Lankan players early coming just after the World Cup final defeat rankles.

Stories of how Sri Lankan officials and guests were not accommodated for  the final by the BCCI add to the messy morass.

Chris Gayle, one the surprising omissions in the IPL, returned to IPL action as a replacement for injured Dirk Nannes only to find rain muting his celebrations in Bangalore. The match between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 19, 2011 was washed out.

Sreesanth says Mahendra Singh Dhoni is like his elder brother.

Sure, Sree, and you’ll play only two games in the next World Cup as well.

MS would not wish to be accused of partiality towards his ‘younger sibling’.

With at least six to seven key players intent on missing out the ODIs and the solitary T20 game in the upcoming West Indies tour immediately following the IPL, younger stars will get a chance to flex their cricketing muscles.

The West Indians are not quite the force they once were. In the 80s, it would have been considered sacrilege to field less than the best side against a West Indian outfit. Now, the boot is on the other foot.

Indian players and the skipper would like to conserve their energy for the more gruelling English and Australian tours. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!

One of the reasons for India’s World Cup victory was the high fitness levels maintained throughout the tournament. The effects of the training regimen are visible in their IPL  performances, as well.

John Gloster, former physio of the Indian team, rated Sachin Tendulkar 10 on 10 for knowing his body and game better than anyone else.Sachin’s running between the wickets during the ‘Cup that counts’ was exemplary.

Almost two weeks into the IPL with no team unbeaten, this edition is probably the most open ever. The advantage gained by retaining their respective cores has eroded by each passing day, for both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers , new kids on the block, have shown that the much criticised reshuffle of players has worked to their advantage. Kolkatta Knight Riders, too, have experienced a renaissance.

Anjum Chopra of India - ICC Women's Cricket Wo...

Anjum Chopra, former captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, has come out in support of an IPL for women’s cricket. Chopra feels that the BCCI should take the lead and push the game forward.

The glam girl is one of 13 participants on “Khatron Ke Khiladi 4" along with Poonam Pandey amongst others.

Meanwhile, Yuvraj Singh through his ‘Yuvraj Singh Foundation’ announced a payment of Rs. 1 lac to Arunima Sinha, a national level netball and volleyball player who lost her leg after being flung out of a running train by thieves.Yuvraj Singh’s new-found maturity augurs well for the ODIs in West Indies. He is now the foremost candidate to lead the side in Dhoni’s absence.

What a change in fortunes for the Punjab lad. From water-boy to Prince.

Shah Rukh Khan has promised to display his abdominal six-pack or eight-pack should KKR triumph.

First Poonam Pandey, now SRK, If ‘stripping’ is in, why wait for a win?

I wonder how many of the Knight Riders wish to see an Indian Mick Jagger. (There’s more than a passing resemblance). Can SRK’s ‘threat’ inspire them to the trophy?

Senior players seem to be getting their own back for the unkind treatment meted out to them by their former franchisee owners.

It was Adam Gilchrist making a point against a unnamed Deccan Chargers official early this week and now it’s Rahul Dravid snubbing Siddarth Mallya quite pointedly in a hotel lobby in Bangalore.

I guess, professionalism is personal.

I once wanted to become an atheist,

but I gave up – they have no holidays.
