Taking a cue from the English Cricket Board (ECB), the Board For Cricket Control in India (BCCI) appointed Anjum Chopra coach of the Indian T20 men’s team.
“The English have been very innovative lately. They stole a march on us by appointing three different captains. We had to do something. This is how we regain the initiative.” said Mr. Ratnakar Shetty, BCCI head of operations.
“It also makes for good PR to have a woman coach at the highest level.” added Mr. Shashank Manohar, BCCI President.
Kapil Dev hailed the engagement, saying that it is wonderful to have an Indian coach for the national side , after a fairly long period.
Sunil Gavaskar was more circumspect warning that Anjum Chopra has a hugely challenging assignment.
“Coaching the Indian team is quite different from guiding ‘Khatron Ke Khiladiyon’ participants.” remarked the former Indian opener.
Anjum Chopra was thrilled at the news.
She said: “I will do my best to repay the faith reposed in me by the BCCI. I intend to lead this team to the T20 World Cup.”
Duncan Fletcher said that he welcomed the move. He recognised the need for managers and coaches to gain some rest and recuperation from non-stop cricket.
“I’m not a young man like Gary Kirsten. And the Indians have such a punishing schedule. I’m relieved.” said the head coach.
Akshay Kumar requested Ms. Chopra to continue on his next show.
It will feature the former Indian women team’s captain and BCCI board members.
